It also makes recommendations on the design of bike lane infrastructure and the expansion of the shared bicycle and bike parking system in the MSP. This analysis involved collecting data on cyclists and recommendations to support decision-making on establishing priorities for expanding the bike lane network, developing and implementing new bike lanes, improving existing connections, meeting current demand, and attracting new bicycle users. Policies were recommended for MDM that were more focused on active mobility, including a sidewalk action plan. The results highlighted the potential for freight-carrying bikes and crossdocking points.1 A manual was also prepared containing guidelines for implementing cyclologistics pilot schemes in the city that could be used by the PMSP and interested companies going forward, along the lines of the pilot model tested in Bogotá (Colombia).

The dramatic increase in air traffic for both passengers and cargo in recent years has placed a heavy strain on the country’s major airports. Indian ports handled cargo of 850 million tonnes and about 9.0 million TEU container traffic in year 2010. Once the new vehicles are delivered, select bus lines across the Greater Cairo area will be converted to 100% electric operation to assess the impact of e-buses and address the potential challenges. Road crashes claim over 1.19 million lives every year, 93% of them in developing countries. One billion people still live more than 2km away from an all-weather road, where lack of access is inextricably linked to poverty.
Africa Transport Policy Program
Accident and fatality rates are one of the highest in the world affecting primarily the poor and vulnerable without their own means of transport. Only about 20 cities out of 87 cities with a population in excess of 500,000 and state capitals have any kind of organized transport and only 3-4 cities could lay claim to a mass rapid transit system. The number of million plus cities is presently at 42 and the urban economy accountd for roughly 60% of the GDP. India is experiencing rapid urbanization with the present urbanization levels at 30% translating to a population of roughly 340 million living in urban areas.
